Despised Icon comes blasting into mainstream death-core scene, with The Healing Process. They play brutal grind, with the
speed and technicality to match. While not all that varied, they do hook me into their songs, and I can sit and listen to
their cd without finding myself bored, or too devastated by the brutality. It has the hooks and breakdowns that would make
anyone want to swirl their head around in glee, to the rhythm section of this masterpiece.
Like most grind cds, the individual songs are not that memorable, but they are good enough to stand on their own. Also,
they do not buy into the Agorophobic Nosebleed philosophy that short songs are better. Most of these songs are over three
minutes long, with only one falling short of that mark, at 2:44.
They employ various vocals, ranging from the death yell, to the deep growl, to the gruesome pig squeal. They use all the
vocals in a way to almost flawlessly accent what is going on in the music.
Most of the songs are centered around breakdowns, true metal breakdowns. While lacking true solos, they do have the occasional
short guitar run, which compliments the rhythm guitars. They use the brief silences that the breakdowns create to either shift
direction, or to dive right back into a crushing breakdown. This sounds like an amped up version of Dying Fetus, with the
squeals of both the vocalist and the guitars.
This album is hard to sentence, as it has nothing new to offer (which is bad), but is so well played in the formula style
of the genre that it is good, and almost original. It will be interesting to see what they do next, and if they do not grow
musically, then I will have to charge them with a crime against metal, and hold this present album against them. I could also
charge them with perjury, as this album did not heal anything, as it made my neck and eardrums hurt. (That's a good thing)
