NorseLaw are not a normal black metal band. They take a vast knowledge of the black metal scene, in a non-satirical twist,
rap about the usual Norse themes, and some of the history of the scene that they owe homage to.
The title song, “Sweet Home Scandinavia” takes the usual rhythm of Lynyrd Skynyrd and changes the
lyrics around, with a synthesized beat, to be about Thor and his power of the world. The next song takes the feud between
Varg and Euronymous and compares them to the American rap scene of East side versus West side.
The project, whose main artist is Valhalla Ice, shows that rap and black metal are not mutually exclusive. The cd looks
like it would be a pure farce, and is mocking black metal, but that is not the case. They love black metal, he's even wearing
an Emperor shirt on the cover. They also take some samples from Luca Turelli and Hammerfall. And, the vocals range from a
fast rap vocal, to a more harsh vocal, reminiscent of a true black metal sound.
My judgment is that this disc is an interesting concept, and the members of NorseLaw should be applauded for originality.
Yet, this is not an easy listen to me, as I prefer to avoid rap, and the synthesized beats and samples. Thus, I judge that
their talent and creativity should be used in other forms, as I find the gimmick to be interesting for a few minutes. And
yes, there are even rap influences in the lyrics, making an unique project, but sometimes uniqueness is not enough to make
me listen to this repeatedly.
