Latticesphere 2004

Prism Theory is a band that I had never heard of, and I bet that you haven't heard of them either. They seem to be a young band, trying to get their music heard, and appreciated. What they play is an odd mix of progressive thrash and almost nu-metal. Not in the Nickelback, Disturbed area of nu-metal. But more in a System of the Down or Tool area. I say this because when the average metalhead sees the dreaded words nu-metal, they run away as fast as they can. Yet, they are attracted to the more interesting side of that genre, and will admit after their friends leave, that they enjoy some of this stuff.

So, back to the review. This is quite solid metal, ranging from aggressive to more mellow shades of an almost thrash metal, new thrash, not old school or Germanic thrash. They play the sort of thrash that the newer, younger audiences like. The album comes in on an intro song, and exits on a short song much like the intro. This does add some form of bookends and cohesiveness. But, there is not much to these, and I really could not hear what was going on in them, nor was there enough time passing, so I did not feel like I was missing anything. But, that's just a little complaint about layout.

Overall, I found this to be a decent disc, but I did find myself getting bored with it, and skipping through it a little, but I think that's just my attention deficit disorder kicking in. Speaking of which, I guess I should mention that the vocals are what conjure about visions of nu-metal. It's mostly clean singing, which reminds me of how the dude from Creed sounded. And they add a few rougher vocal parts, that come off as more of a scream than a growl or anything, furthering my visions of such bands that I mentioned before.

My judgment is, that these youngsters need to keep plugging away, as this is very solid material. I think that they need to work on some things, such as the rough vocals. These guys will not be the next Dream Theater, not that is their goal. But, with a few more years, and a stepped up sound, they could attract some deserved credit and loyal fans.
