Nightmare Records- 2004

This cd starts with a punch, and I quite enjoy when an album reaches out, and grabs you in the first few seconds of music. First impressions mean a lot. I put this disc in thinking that I did not like this disc, and quickly forgot that as the cymbal punches came down, and the chug was brought.

But, unfortunately, I remembered quite quickly why I do not like this disc. As you can probably guess, it is a form of power metal. That usually is the first count against a band in my court, but the music is enrapturing.

And the vocals make me want to banish them from existence. It is no secret that a vocalist breaks or makes a band, especially in power metal. And this vocalist does nothing for me at the onset. But, as I let it play, I get more and more used to it. Maybe it is just the strong accent coming through. I think that the strength of the music compels me to fight through the vocals, and disregard a minor imperfection in light of the whole. Now, I am not saying that this is a perfect album, but like most metal that is on a respectable label, it is not sub-par. Maybe my hesitances to spin it is that it does not stand out of the crowd that well.

My judgment then is that a band with talent should do something that makes them unique. Not something absurd like only using keyboards, but something a little more distinguishing then fast paced power metal. I thus sentence generic power metal to hard manual labor, where it will fade away naturally. I also am ordering that power metal should not be resuscitated. If one finds power metal on it's death bed, then they should do the humane thing and pull the plug.
