Nightmare Records- 2004

Pyramaze release their latest offering to the metal community,Melancholy Beast. This is standard power metal, with nothing lacking for diehard fans of this genre. It offers soaring guitar solos morphing into keyboard solos, and then finally changing into a continuation of the song. The melodies are quite well worked out, in the guitar\keyboard realm, but also in the vocal department. Lance King has not lost a step, and wisely surrounds himself with a band that can produce quality power metal, with a probing edge. Like most of the bands on Nightmare Records, it would be unfair, and unwise, on the half of the reviewer to just throw them in with the power metal crowd. There are quite a few progressive elements incorporated, which helps Pyramaze and bands like them to stand out from the crowd.

These are not kids trying to be a clone of their heroes. It is a solid, creative approach to songwriting, which makes it hard to describe in a review. It would be simple if I could say that they were trying to be, let's say, Rhapsody. Then, I could say if they lived up to that or not. But, I'm not sure if I can make such a comparison in this case, as no bands are doing what Pyramaze is.

It is therefore my judgment that the readers of this humble web magazine should take the Nile or Emperor out of their cd player, and put this disc in. Expand your horizons, please. It makes for a great approach to music if you can appreciate multiple offerings, from multiple genres. I know that it's fun to be a Black Metal Elitist, but just wait till your friends leave the room, and slip this disc in, and indulge the inner metalhead that loves a band that encourages melody and differences.
