Nuclear Blast 2005

Hypocrisy, with their newest album, is continuing to prove to the world that they have arrived on the scene, and will never put out an album that compromises their status as a premier death metal band.

Virus showcases an aggressive death metal sound, rooted in the world of thrash. There are hints of the newer school of thrash, which blend well with the vocal delivery and interesting rhythm guitar work. Along with this, they do a nice job in keeping some of the raw sound in the production, so that it does not sound crystal clean, which would lessen the gritty feel that is necessary in the genre.

This is not the most creative album out there, it is not really challenging any conceptions of what can be done musically, yet it is not cliché. The track A Thousand Lies is a good example of this. It starts out with a slower acoustic-ish interlude, goes into the faster section, to return to the beginning idea, and then play between the two themes and ideas inside of the song. This shows pretty mature song writing.

One thing that is missing in the death metal scene, especially the bands that are close to the melodic death metal segment, is the guitar solo This is the case on this disc. Yes, there is some interesting leads being played, and the occasional solo (if you count something like the eight second run in Blooddrenched). My judgment is that the solo needs to return to the solo, and bring that element out like their thrash forefathers did.
