Primordial has somewhat of a cultish following, and make their mainstream metal debut with The Gathering Wilderness.
The music seems to have a primitive leaning, and gives the listener a sense that they are back when music was pure, sitting
around with their tribe. This does not mean that they are folk metal like a Finntroll, as they lack the symphonics of such
a genre, but it gives off that type of vibe.
Yet, with the feeling of the music, the vocals ruin this disc for me, and I find that I can get into this disc. Usually,
mediocre vocals grow on me, but these are almost an offense to my ears. They assault my ears, and are guilty of mugging this
album. They are screamed, with a somewhat black-ish tinge. They do delve into the screech of black metal also, when they go
low. But, they are definitely the weak point of an interesting approach to metal. But, I cannot penetrate into this, and cannot
get through a solid listen of the disc without taking a break. Thus, this disc will not get spun by me often, and I am sure
I am unfairly judging their effort. I am just lacking their vision, and visions of their fans. If you are not easily scared
off by vocals, this may be a band for you.
My judgment is that this disc does not carry the proper warning for the aural crimes committed upon the listener. The
rest of the band, sans vocalist, are charged as accomplices in this crime, but are found not guilty due to their performance.
Thusly, I charge the vocalist to listen to, and emulate such vocalists as Emperor Magus Caligula, Chuck Billy, and Chuck Schuldiner.
A mixture of such vocalists, on top of the music, would be a much better release.
